How to hang lining paper
For conventional lining paper that needs soaking, start with a sound, clean, dry wall. Paste and soak the lengths, hang with butt joints, then let the lining dry completely before painting or wallpapering. The Anaglypta instructions below describe that sequence.

Using Wallrock Fibreliner Original 150? Its method is different: hang it immediately, without soaking. That applies whether you paste the wall or the material. Use its own instructions rather than the soaking sequence below.

1. Check the wall and choose the paper
Choose against the product description and the condition of the plaster. Anaglypta 1000 is intended for small defects in older plaster in good condition. Erfurt MAV Professional 1400 is described for larger cracks and defects, but the plaster must still be sound.

If you use Bartoline All Purpose Wallpaper Adhesive, its technical sheet says to let the sized surface dry completely before papering. Check the preparation instructions for the adhesive you have selected.

Buying Erfurt MAV Professional Lining? Check whether the rolls use its old or new formula. The manufacturer recommends keeping the two formulas separate within a project.

2. Set out the first length
Under decorative wallpaper, Anaglypta recommends hanging the lining at 90 degrees to the final wallcovering.

Mark Rigby of Dulux Academy explains the reason for cross-lining: coinciding seams can produce bumps or creases. If you are painting the lining, Dulux Decorator Centre says either horizontal or vertical hanging is suitable.

For Erfurt MAV Professional 1400, cut each length with spare paper for trimming at the ends. Set out a straight reference line, or use a plumb line, to position the first length.

3. Paste and soak
Anaglypta 1700 recommends a good-quality ready-mixed adhesive. This is a recommendation for that paper, rather than a rule for every lining product.

For lining beneath decorative wallpaper, Anaglypta advises choosing an adhesive also recommended for that wallpaper.

Paste the same face on every Anaglypta length. Spread adhesive evenly, right to the edges.

Fold the pasted Anaglypta paper without creasing it, then allow it to soak until pliable. Keep the soaking period consistent from one length to the next.

4. Hang, join and trim
Position the soaked length against your reference. Erfurt MAV Professional 1400 specifies a wallpaper brush for smoothing the paper once it is in place.

Anaglypta directs you to trim after smoothing. Bring subsequent lengths together with butt joints, without overlap.

Remove adhesive from the face with a sponge and clean water, as the Anaglypta instructions specify.

Pause after the first 2 or 3 drops. Anaglypta recommends inspecting the result at this stage before you carry on with the rest.

5. Let it dry before finishing
Anaglypta requires complete drying before paint or decorative wallpaper, normally taking at least 24 hours. Elapsed time alone is not confirmation that it is ready.

Let it dry naturally. Anaglypta advises against using heaters or fans to hurry it along. Its guidance also warns that water-based paint can re-wet paper before the adhesive has fully cured, which can lift the seams.
